A Million Little Pieces of Oprah's Bullshit - Reposted
I took this down because I received negative feedback about it via email, but I am putting it back because you know what this blog is for? My opnion and my feelings....venting, talking, etcetera. I don't care that people disagreed with me, but emailing me and calling me "Freys Whore" won't fly either....*click, ban IP, click". Anyway......back to it:
Look it's no secret that I do not like Oprah nor do I watch her show....I think the huddled masses have her wayyyyy overrated and they are like the Borg, I swear; if Oprah says do it or read it, we must! Cut the crap, kids...she's just a woman with more money than God. I am sure that she has some amazing ideas and some great shows, but let's not forget that this is the woman that spawned Dr. Phil into fame....I'm just sayin'. This is also the same woman who pimped a man's book without checking the facts, then even defended him when the facts got splattered all over The Smoking Gun, but now has the balls to go on teevee and make him feel like he is a petulant child that has to bow down to her and grovel for forgiveness in front of her studio audience??? Seriously, someone alert GWB and let's put America on yellow alert...an author embellished a bit in his memoirs....the sky is falling!
I'm not going to lie to you and tell you that I know all of the facts; I read maybe the first few pages of the scandal on The Smoking Gun sight then had to stop for fear that my eye rolling would cause permanent damage to the baby browns. Here is the thing that gets me....it is a book. And yes, he called it a "memoir" which maybe he should not done if he was going to beef up the dramatic effect and all of that jazz, but at the end of the day, the message comes across the same....don't let yourself end up down a deep hole of drunken despair like he did. The graphic imagery that I have read in this book and the pictures of what this character (Frey) must have felt still resonate because maybe where he embellished, he also forgot things that happened to him that may have been worse. News flash people, a drunk assed, drugged up person is not going to be Scooby Doo on all of the details of their past....they can't remember half of it.
But, he admits to embellishing and then Oprah spanks his pee-pee and says, "no you mean LYING, James". And then James grovels and looks like he really either wants to choke the beyotch or run off of the stage and grab the bottle again (please don't) and this whole show makes me shake my head. This really is just not that big of a deal, right? I mean, Oprah's biggest problem, besides the fact that James did lie a bit, is that she did not bother to cover her own ass when she was ready to convince her Borg that this was the best book .....evar!!! So now are we supposed to be upset with James but feel sorry for Oprah? Not gonna do it.
Nobody get me wrong; I don't condone lying...in fact, lying got me in a ton of trouble once too...but I bet that if I tried to recount every moment of the worst experience of my life, there would be inconsistencies galore because my brain has chosen to block out some of that horrific and painful part of my past and to recall anything that is pure non-fiction at this point in time would never happen. Is that what happened to James or did he just balls-to-the-wall lie to get more people to buy his book? While I am at it, did the president just balls-to-the-wall lie to get more votes? Does McDonald's just balls-to-the-wall lie to get people to consume more harmful foods? I think you see where I am going with this.
In the end, I take no stand for or against James Frey...what he has done or not done is for him to deal with ....with HIS soul, HIS heart and HIS God. What I am going to stand up and say is this....I don't give a rat's rabid ass what Oprah says, thinks or does regarding this whole matter....it is a good book and fictionalized or not, could potentially open our eyes to sides of addiction that we never new existed.
Agree or disagree, you are still my friend so don't feel afraid to be opposing council in your comments ;). You know how I get all Scorpio-like and crazy about taking a stance on something that I totally don't really need to get worked up about anyway ;)
Harpo Shmarpo Kisses,
Me
LMFAO @ Frey's whore. LOL LOL LOL
OMG.
Yeah. How about Oprah is a 'ho for the money! This is so CLEARLY about covering her own ass.

Hilly - I'm sorry you got blasted for you comments and I'm proud of you for putting them back up. Why someone would think that you are not entitled to express your own opinion on your blog is beyond me.
I agree with you to a certain extent - the Oprah being a leader of a cult extent. But I am happy that she has given some great authors new fame and money for books that truly did deserve to be recognized. That being said, why, oh why, did she have to pick such a fragile soul to lambast? I'm beside myself with worry that this man will spiral downwards because of her attempt to regaind credibility with her clones. I'm just praying for him to have the strength to ge through this. It was an f'in book for pete's sake - I don't remember reading ANYWHERE in the book that there weren't elements of non-fiction weaved in.
She needs to back off and let this man live his life. He's not her pawn. He's a human being with faults and feelings.
(steps off soap box). Love your blog by the way - you're one of my daily reads!

i agree. i haven't read the book yet, but i have it. i'm still going to read it too.
who cares if he may have exaggerated some parts or even lied about them. books are for enjoyment, no matter what part of the bookstore it comes from. and sometimes, it takes a lot for us readers to enjoy something these days (with our short attention span and all).
there's a memoir craze going on out there. it makes me hesitate to write anything similar to a memoir just because that section is over loaded. but maybe he just needed a way to stand out to get his message heard. and even if it took one person, then that's what should matter. you've just proven that it touched one person.
we are such an elitist society that i'm just sick of it.
i don't care about oprah and her drama. i've seen snipets of her defense of him and then her regret. i like her and i don't. but like one of your commenters said earlier, this type of scrutinizing just might do him in. and that would be a shame. but.. i bet a lot of people would laugh at him if he did relaps. and that's even more of a shame.
*shakes head*
i swear. we're so judgmental and righteous.

I have probably not heard as much of the hoopla as some others, but from what I know, I also feel that Oprah was out of line.
We read the book for my book club, and we met last Wednesday to discuss the book. We all agreed that we all liked the book. It was better than some of the Pulitzer Prize novels that we have read and all hated. Collectively, we all had the opinion that perhaps it was his recollection of events (when you add a few years to your memories, things are not as crystal clear as they were before) and I'm sure he had a lot of pain and agony that he went through. We also thought that it was a great book to put a face on addiction for folks that do not have an addiction.
I found in the book it was intersting in rehab when he wanted to eat eat eat to make up for the fact that he was not using. Trading one addiction for another...
And thanks for putting the post back up, otherwise I would not have been able to read it!

Before I became a mom, Oprah was the goddess. I watched faithfully sure that I would do my part to help make the world a better place. I like Oprah. However...
Now that I am a mommy, the bitch is bringing me down. I switched to Ellen. I want to laugh and be entertained by my talk show hosts. When I want to know the world's latest fiasco I watch the news.

I was so excited for Planet Earth on the discovery channel until my sister's informed me that Oprah had a show on it. Why must she RUIN everything? I'm on board with the "Just Say No to Oprah" and the support of James Frey!

I've just been staying at home doing nothing, but pfft. Today was a total loss, but oh well. I've pretty much been doing nothing worth mentioning.

Not much on my mind right now. I haven't been up to anything. Today was a complete loss. That's how it is. Not much exciting going on these days.

Well, I'm glad I finally found one more person on earth who doesn't worship Oprah. I have never liked her and never will. Now just because she endorsed Obama, he is going to be our next pres. Oh me.

Can I just say yay! I feel exactly the same way as you..even though this post is way old I just had to comment.
That was the day..the day she ruined James Frey..that I stopped watching her show. I have watched maybe 2 since then and will never, ever have the respect for her that I once had.
She sickens me.

Oprah is a person.
Just a person.
She's good.
She's bad.
She's insecure.
She's too secure.
She's JUST a person.
Same as the president, spiritual leaders, politicians, movie stars, blah blah blah...
PEOPLE.
We're weak to worship their words, advice, etc...as if they are more than just another person that will fall off their pedestal at some point and end up needing a nose job.
